Noticing Who We See - September 28, 2025

Bible Study – Noticing Who We See

Share:  Your highs (something that made you happy) and lows (something that made you sad) this week with others around you or write them down.

What do you choose to notice as we race through your daily tasks?  Who are the invisible ones in your midst?  Who is holding out a hand to us?

Write a list of people who do work that we usually do not notice. For example, the law enforcement officer who drives around the town at night to protect us, or the Emergency Room nurses who are ready when people need them. (Other options could include day-care workers, school crossing guards, the people who clean our schools and our church, etc.)  We have a story today about someone who was not noticed.

Opening Prayer:  Thank you, God, for stories Jesus tells that help us notice people we might never see.  Amen.

Please open your Bibles to Luke 16:19-31 and read or read the scriptures below.

Luke 16:19-31

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Activities:

Journal:  In your journal write a skit showing a rich man who has absolutely everything and has a dream of the Lazarus story and changes his ways.  Characters included could be the rich man, someone to drive his beautiful car for him, someone who works for him whose child is very sick and who he had never noticed.  Show the before and the after of this story in your skit.

Lazarus and Rich Man Art:  You will need many shapes and sizes of cut out construction paper.  Take 10 pieces/shapes of construction paper and do your best of shaping and forming Lazarus and the Rich Man from today’s lesson.  Glue onto a piece of construction paper.  Write a title or words from today’s Bible verse.

Story Etchings:  You will need a piece of paper and markers.  Write words that you read from the story on different parts of the paper.  For example rich man, wake up, follow, Jesus, pray and God’s voice.  Then draw squiggly colorful lines around each word or set of words.   You can hang your beautiful art in your room.
